IPL 2025: Three Playing XI Decisions CSK Must Get Right to Win

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have built a formidable squad for IPL 2025 and will be eyeing their sixth title. However, success in the tournament will hinge on making the right team selections.
Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK had a mixed campaign last season, finishing fifth with seven wins and seven losses. With the mega auction reshuffling squads across all ten franchises, CSK had to make some tough calls. Their core remained intact, including Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Matheesha Pathirana, and MS Dhoni. They strengthened their lineup in the auction by acquiring Sam Curran, Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Noor Ahmad, Ravi Ashwin, and Jamie Overton.
Now, with IPL 2025 approaching, CSK faces three crucial Playing XI decisions that could define their season.
1. Who Should Open with Ruturaj Gaikwad – Devon Conway or Rachin Ravindra?
Devon Conway was instrumental in CSK’s 2023 title run, amassing 672 runs at an impressive average of 51 and a strike rate of nearly 140. However, he missed the 2024 season due to injury, and since his return, his performances have been inconsistent. In the recent SA20 tournament, Conway scored just one half-century in 10 innings, striking at 113.80.
Rachin Ravindra, on the other hand, is an explosive option at the top. In the previous IPL season, he played 10 matches, scoring 222 runs at a fiery strike rate of 160.86, albeit with an average of 22. His attacking approach could provide CSK with flying starts, but consistency remains a concern.
CSK must decide between Conway’s experience and Ravindra’s aggressive approach to ensure stability at the top. This choice will be pivotal in their title ambitions and could impact the IPL app’s real money players looking for top-performing batters.
2. Should Ravi Ashwin Be a Regular Starter?
Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin returns to CSK, the franchise where he first made his name. While he brings immense experience, his role in the playing XI isn’t guaranteed. Last season, Ashwin struggled, managing just nine wickets from 14 games at an economy of 8.49.
CSK has also roped in Noor Ahmad, the Afghanistan wrist-spinner in peak form. Given the spin-friendly conditions at Chepauk, Noor could be the preferred frontline spinner. However, Ashwin’s experience and ability to bowl in different game phases make him valuable, especially in matches played in Chennai and Lucknow.
A strategic rotation between Ashwin and an additional pacer could be CSK’s best approach to maximise their bowling strength.
3. Who Should Partner Pathirana in the Pace Attack?
Sri Lankan speedster Matheesha Pathirana will spearhead CSK’s pace attack, but the choice of his bowling partner remains uncertain. The team has several options: Sam Curran, Mukesh Choudhary, Khaleel Ahmed, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Anshul Kamboj, and Gurjapneet Singh.
Despite being a world-class all-rounder, Sam Curran hasn’t been highly effective with the ball in recent seasons. Given his versatility, he is expected to feature in the XI, but CSK cannot solely rely on his bowling.
Mukesh Choudhary had a stellar domestic season, picking up 15 wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and following it up with strong performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Ranji Trophy. His form makes him a strong contender for a spot in the playing XI.
Meanwhile, Khaleel Ahmed brings valuable IPL experience, having played 57 matches. Last season, he took 17 wickets, although his economy of 9.58 was on the higher side.
CSK’s decision on the second pacer will be crucial, especially in crunch games where defending scores will be vital. For cricket betting enthusiasts and those using IPL betting apps real money, keeping an eye on CSK’s final pace combination could offer key betting insights.
CSK has a well-balanced squad for IPL 2025, but their title hopes will depend on how they navigate these selection dilemmas. The opening combination, Ashwin’s role, and the pace of attack choices are all key areas that could shape their campaign.
